The People’s Bloc – People Powered Community Districting
Mission
Whether we’re helping a neighbor in need, cooking up a Sunday block party, or organizing for our collective needs, nobody knows our communities better than the people who live in them. But for too long, politicians have divided us into districts serving their political interests instead of our communities’ needs. They want to take community districting out of our hands so they can pick and choose who counts, tearing our neighborhoods apart for the next ten years.
Redistricting or community districting is the process of redrawing the lines of legislative districts to ensure equal and equitable political representation of residents. For generations, redistricting has been used as a tool to disenfranchise and dilute the power of communities. By joining together to speak out for fair districting, we can make our communities whole and deliver what our schools and families need for a decade to come.
State Level
Redistricting California
Following two successful propositions, and beginning with the 2011 redistricting cycle, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission (CRC) has had the authority to redraw the boundaries of all California Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, and Board of Equalization districts. In 2021, for the second time, a 14-member commission has been elected to lead this process. This is an opportunity for communities to say: when it comes to our districts, we draw the line.
County Level
Redistricting LA County
For the first, the authority for redrawing the boundaries of L.A. County’s supervisorial districts will be in the hands of 14 commissioners instead of the 5 county supervisors. The inaugural Los Angeles Citizens Redistricting Commission will hear directly from community residents to ensure the new districts respect the way people understand the boundaries and shared characteristics of their communities. The districts we draw this year will shape our lives and our communities for the next decade.
City Level
Redistricting LA City
The L.A. City Council Redistricting Advisory Commission was formed to support the city’s 2021 redistricting process. These 21 commissioners were selected by current L.A. City Council Members to advise their efforts. Community participation is especially important when line drawing is in the hands of incumbents. We must mobilize massive participation among the greatest possible number of people to pressure local lawmakers to draw fair districts.
School District Level
Redistricting Los Angeles Unified School District
The Los Angeles Unified School District Redistricting Advisory Commission was formed to support the school district’s 2021 redistricting process. These commissioners were selected by current L.A. City Council Members to advise their efforts. Community participation is especially important when line drawing is in the hands of incumbents. By joining together to speak out on fair districting, we can draw districts that respect the needs and interests of all school families and stakeholders.
